Like many other reviewers here I disliked the "tone" of the book. Granted, it is clearly written for the American market, but because a lot of the "examples" are fictional, it's hard to empathise. What you notice very quickly is that the book is written for the most basic audience. If you don't know what a trojan is or what a root user is, then maybe you'll learn something. Other than that, the techniques repeat themselves and some of the examples are hopelessly out of date ie. I can't use the internet because I'm on the phone and it's a dial-up connection!Take this book as a basic explanation of social engineering techniques, and some countermeasures, but nothing more.

Si ce livre a été écrit par un hacker "légendaire", il ne parle clairement pas du hacking mais de l'élément humain de la sécurité d'un système d'information : intrusion, crochetage, usurpation d'identité, vol de documents... Mitnick utilise des cas concrets, issus de sa carrière de consultant, pour expliquer à chaque fois les menaces pour une entreprise et présenter quelques contre-mesures et bonnes pratiques.Le livre est donc assez lisible, même si les chapitres sont décousus (intrusion, manipulation, comment répondre au téléphone etc). L'auteur donne ici un panorama assez large des menaces physiques (peu d'éléments informatiques donc) qui peuvent survenir. C'est donc une lecture intéressante, même si quelques points sont datés : un cas repose ainsi intégralement sur le détournement d'un fax...Le principal reproche est que le livre manque globalement de fond, à l'exception des recommandations finales, qui sont implémentables telles quelles. Mitnick parle de lui, de ses clients (ce qui est loin d'être inintéressant ! ) mais on a un peu trop l'impression de tenir une discussion de bar sur la sécurité.Ce livre est donc par moment intéressant, parfois daté mais globalement superficiel.

Released in 2003, I can only imagine it was already hugely out of date. This book has not aged well, the examples remind me that it is not 1997 and peoples attitudes to sensitive information have come along way.The book sits in this odd void where it spends the first two thirds telling ridiculous short stories which are idealistic and mostly the same. The last part then preaches about how you can fix them.I have also read the art of intrusion which I enjoyed a lot more. The writing style is poor, each of the examples are very similar and boring. If you do want to read it: skip to the middle and read one or two stories from the second chapter.

Book is very informative in regards to how to prevent company or personal resources from getting into the wrong hands. Also gives you an insight on how easy it is to get information. Author is very egotistical about himself and what he use to do. The use of the term Social Engineer is overused and gets to be a little much by the fourth chapter.
